What is hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis is a medical procedure that artificially purifies the blood to eliminate waste and excess fluids when the kidneys are unable to do so effectively. During procedure blood passes through a tube into an artificial kidney called a dialyzer. As blood passes through dialyzer it is purified from waste and excess fluids and then returned to the body.

Frequently asked questions

How often and for how long should hemodialysis be performed?

Hemodialysis is usually performed three times a week, with each session lasting approximately four hours. The specific frequency and duration of treatments may vary based on the individual patient's health conditions and the recommendations of their attending physician.

What are the possible side effects and risks of hemodialysis?

Hemodialysis can have several side effects and risks, including low blood pressure, fatigue, muscle cramps, itchy skin, anemia, sleep disturbances, a risk of infection at the needle site, and more. Regular visits to your doctor are essential to monitor your health and manage any potential side effects.

How to prepare for the hemodialysis procedure and what lifestyle changes may be necessary?

Before starting hemodialysis, it is essential to establish vascular access, typically through an arteriovenous fistula, a blood prosthesis, or a hemodialysis catheter. While initiating the dialysis procedure, a brief discomfort may occur due to needle insertion into the fistula. However, the dialysis process itself is generally painless.

Adapting to several lifestyle changes may be necessary, including dietary and fluid restrictions, regular medical check-ups, and appropriate medication use. Patients are encouraged to avoid smoking, engage in physical activity, and effectively manage other health conditions such as diabetes or hypertension to enhance overall well-being and optimize the benefits of hemodialysis.
